Evaluating a rare book - traits that matter

How do you evaluate a book? Every individual has a unique approach in this regard. You may consider your nursery rhyme book to be more valuable than all that you own. However, when it comes to buying rare, antiques and collectible books, there is a benchmark for excellence.

Not every old book qualifies as a collectible. The books that may be classified as rare are those that are not available in abundance and are in demand. Take for example, the Bible. Since its first edition in 1455, it has been published numerous times. And not all of these are considered to be valuable. But if you can lay your hands on the first edition, that is, the Gutenberg Bible, you are the proud owner of a prized possession.

What makes the books special? If it's a privately printed book and there are only a certain number of editions available in the market it may achieve the status of a collectible. Or if it's an work a world-renowned author and bears his/her signature. Or it has illustrations done by a reputed illustrator.

These are just examples of what may be considered as worthy of locating down. However, what defines a collectible is its content.
